On April 18-20 the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, will see pop-culture fans celebrating all things geekdom at the 2014 Awesome Con. This years’ event will be held in a new 230,000 square foot conference space, adding more than ten rooms for its 2014 programming.
To kick-off the event Awesome Con and DC’s upcoming Museum of Science Fiction are joining forces with caped crusaders and comic book character enthusiasts across the region in an attempt to break the current GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS record for most costumed cosplay attendees.
“On April 19, 2011, World Joyland in China set the current GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS TITLE with 1,530 people dressed as comic book characters,” said Ben Penrod, Awesome Con co-founder, in a press release. “I know we can break that record and mark Washington, DC as the capital city of cosplay.”
Still rooted in its beginnings as a comic book convention, Awesome Con will host creators like George Perez, Steve Niles, Marc Hempel, Dan Parent, and more than 40 other professional artists and writers. Comic book publishers will also be in attendance offering exclusive comics and signings at their booths including, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite, and Action Lab Studios.
In the exhibit hall, over 100 exhibitors will be selling comics, toys, video games, collectibles, and all sorts of memorabilia and geeky merchandise. Over 200 artists will be displaying original artwork, self-published books, and more original creations. Families and kids can visit the K-ZONE, a special all-ages area planned with help from Kids Comic Con.
